At our church here in Lubbock we’ve been going through the book of James. It’s been a really neat study and I wish Justin and I could have caught more of it. Yesterday, we discussed James 5:1-6. This passage is a warning to what our pastor Dusty referred to as the “unrighteously rich”. Basically it is a warning to those who selfishly spend their money. (more…)

Last night was “Deep Conversation Night” at the St. John’s.  A great time of fellowship and deep Christian discussion about an array of things.  This old school fella named Thomas Watson wrote a book  called, The Christian Soldier in 1669.  In he wrote about intentional Christianity in our personal and public lives.  Here is some of what he writes!:

“Take heed of a slothful, lazy disposition.  A slothful person would gladly have Heaven–but is loathe to take it by storm. (more…)

Hey guys and girls,

So Vickery Camps are going really well and they’ve really been smooth these last two weeks. However, a lot of refugee kids have been in summer school and weren’t able to come but that’s all about about to change. The last day of summer school was today, June 28, so we’re expecting a jump in the number of kids that we have. We really don’t know how many more kids are going to come. (more…)

From May 21-26th, seven college students (Charley Allen, Briana Blair, David Harris, Tara Journey, James Mason, Jordan Mason, and Ruthie Norten) along with Mike Willis traveled to Chalmette, LA to serve with Samaritan’s Purse.  The team gutted the once flooded and thus mold-infested home of Velma and Lucius Thompson, both believers.  (more…)

Sometimes I pretend I don’t have time. All the tasks on my to-do list are incredibly important.

I’m too busy to answer that email. Too busy to help my neighbor—anyway, I don’t even speak Spanish. And I can’t give my wife a hand—too much to do. I’ve got a meeting. I’ve got to get the sermon posted. I’m blogging. Terribly important, indeed.

Then there’s Jesus. (more…)

New Orleans and the surrounding areas are still in shambles from hurricane Katrina. They still need help. We’re going to help.  We will wear Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) suits and will be equipped with crowbars and cleansers to pull off the walls and destroy the mold. (This is safe! Volunteers have been doing this for 1 ½ years now). (more…)

Oh yeah! Here it is again. You asked for it. You got it! Pine Cove is an incredible camp because they are focused steadfastly on the gospel so it’s great to serve there. These weekends have these primary purposes: 1) we serve behind the scenes for free so they can save money to better do their work; 2) we grow closer together as we serve with a common purpose.

Stewardship for the sake of the Gospel

In west-central Kenya in a town called Kericho, there exists a struggling orphanage with 26 orphans and only 4 beds. The orphanage is a converted home with sheets hung on ropes to make extra bedrooms and stacks of cardboard functioning as padding in for beds. On Friday, July 28th, 2006, some of us visited this orphanage, a part of Jehovah Nissi Orphan Support Organization (JENIOSO) mothered by Ms. Magdalene Marindany. Most of the children have HIV-AIDS and little hope. (more…)

So I started reading Nehemiah this morning for my quiet time and absolutely loved it. What was really awesome to me about him was that when he was confronted with a problem or an issue he would call upon the Lord and then he would DO something. What I mean is that he would pray and then take action and trust that God would be with Him and bless his efforts. That is very contrary to the way Tyler Kern lives his life for sure. (more…)
